If you try to start your car and it won't fire up, you can often listen near your fuel tank when you turn the key on. This may be related to a failure in the fuel pump, the fuel pump relay, the cutoff relay, or a variety of other factors that may need proper diagnosis. Mechanical and electric fuel pumps can wear out, clog, or lose capacity over time, or they may suddenly fail to operate entirely. These electric fuel pumps are activated as soon as you turn the key to deliver fuel to fuel rail(s) and injectors and to build fuel pressure for startup. On older vehicles, a mechanical fuel pump was used that was driven by the camshaft and employed a rubber diaphragm to create suction, but on most modern vehicles, an electronic pump located in the fuel tank pumps the fuel through the rest of the system. The fuel pump creates a vacuum that pulls fuel from the gas tank and pressurizes it for use in the fuel delivery system.
